The Legacy of Madame Song
Inspired by the current M+ Museum exhibition – Madame Song: Pioneering Art and Fashion in China
Song Huai-Kuei (1937-2006), widely known as Madame Song, transformed the landscape of art, fashion, and culture in China from the 1980s to 2000s. The panel explores the legacy of her extraordinary life as pioneering fashion designer, artist, and entrepreneur through the lens of three Asian American cultural practitioners who are defining the current moment. Madame Song’s experiences living and working abroad during the Cold War shaped her rare cosmopolitan identity. Her multiple identities as artist, businessperson, and social influencer were pivotal to her impact on cultural trends that are relevant to questions today.
Panelists: Blake Abbie, editor-in-chief of A Magazine Curated By; Gia Kuan, founder of Gia Kuan Consulting, and Kim Shui, fashion designer with moderator: JiaJia Fei, digital strategist for the art world
