About

M+ American Friends Foundation (M+AFF) is an independent charitable organization based in the United States whose mission is to spotlight and support the collection, programs, and exhibitions presented by M+ Museum.

Over a decade in the making, M+ was envisioned to be a multidisciplinary museum of visual culture, bringing important perspective from Asia and a platform to expand the global conversation about our times, across multiple disciplines of visual art, design architecture, and moving image.  M+’s location in Hong Kong, whose unique history and vibrancy as a cosmopolitan center where East meets West, enriches the connections that this new institution can bridge.

M+ is Asia’s first global museum of visual culture.

With advancements in technology and forms of communication advanced, visual culture includes not only the traditional forms of visual arts but also categories produced for popular consumption, such as photography, cinema, music videos, as well as the Internet and digital media.

To examine these diverse, multi-faceted narratives of our times, M+ has built four ground-breaking permanent collections that form the backbone of the museum: the M+ Collection, the M+ Sigg Collection, the M+ Library Special Collection, and the M+ Collection Archives.  Alongside M+’s special exhibitions, public programs, and learning and interpretation programs, these include twentieth and twenty-first century works from Hong Kong, mainland China, and regions across Asia and beyond, all rich sources of ideas and stories to explore.

M+AFF illuminates the curatorial program at M+.

M+ AFF hosts programs for audiences in the US designed to cultivate understanding and appreciation of the diverse curatorial streams at M+ and to share perspectives on visual culture from Asia. M+ AFF programs add to the conversation inspired by M+ in three primary areas:

Visual Art

M+ has launched significant new perspectives on modern and contemporary visual art through its special exhibitions, the M+ Collection, and the M+ Sigg Collection.  M+AFF extends the conversation about this important repository of work to a community in the US through gatherings of artists, creators, curators, historians, and cultural enthusiasts.  From panel discussions and studio visits to local and international exhibitions and fair visits, M+AFF programs aim to spotlight the importance of M+ in the global discourse on contemporary art.

Design and Architecture

Design and Architecture programs rooted by the scholarship and collections from M+ bring fresh context to the work of architects and designers that fosters nuanced investigations, from visionary architecture to the everyday design objects that comprise the visual culture of our lives.

Moving Image & Digital Art

Moving Image & Digital Art programs include discussions and conversations not only about films, video art, and their related material histories, but also works utilizing the internet, artificial intelligence, and new media.   What falls into this category of visual culture is immense and varied, with the greatest possibility of bringing in new voices to articulate the impact of visual culture has on humanity.

M+AFF will invite its members to embark on immersive journeys to Hong Kong and experience the unparalleled richness of M+.
